HDYGG: Meet My City-Subsidized Compost Bin

I’d been planning to start composting for a long time, but something about the process of choosing a bin (there are many, many options, and we all know how I start to sweat when faced with too many of those) has held me back. It hasn’t helped that generally speaking, compost bins are pretty pricey. I could have made a simple bin out of an old plastic trash can or wire mesh or even wood pallets, but the truth is (brace yourself), I’m not the handiest chick on the block (that would be Steph, natch). So, I was very excited to learn that the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation offers free composting workshops and discounted bins!

HDYGG: Aphids, or The A$$holios In My Garden

Last week, I hardly knew what an aphid was. This week, it’s personal. Do you hate these little bastards as much as I do? Can we get together and just talk smack about them all day? Possibly at a bar? That’s right, i’m worked up, and I’ve got some choice words for the little jerks.

HDYGG: Transcendent Broccoli and Double Rainbow Chard

Every time we eat a salad of lettuce from our garden, my husband and I find ourselves saying things like, “This lettuce is amazing,” and “There is no comparison,” and “This is ridiculously delicious.” Lettuce nerds we may be, but the discrepancy between store bought lettuce and the stuff we pick and eat right away is enormous. It turns out that it’s also really easy to grow, even if you don’t have room for raised beds in your yard. Since reading Andrea Bellamy’s great book, Sugar Snaps and Strawberries, I’m on the hunt for every overlooked space around our house. Come summertime, I’m hoping that I’ll have troughs and pots and trellises teeming with herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Even if you only have room for a window box or a pot on your balcony, you can grow your own lettuce (and more). I’ve discovered so many inspiring balcony and small-space gardeners in the past couple of months, and will profile a few of them in an upcoming column. It’s a revelation and a revolution!   Continue reading
